It’s All About The Moment

Documentary photography is about being in the right place at the right time to capture the glancing moments that sometimes only last a second or two, without any kind of posing or prompting. It’s what real, authentic storytelling is all about. The photograph above is the kind of candid, relaxed moment I love to document at weddings. You can see the love and pride on this guest’s face as she takes it all in. The speeches in particular are a great time to people-watch when all the stories come out from brides, grooms, family members, best men and maids of honour. Tales full of comical memories and embarrassing moments often accompany gushing declarations of love and admiration, and I love to capture the guests soaking it all in. It’s a time for laughter, happy tears and celebration. Weddings are full of so many lovely moments like this where a simple glance, smile or embrace tells a thousand words and my passion is documenting them for you to keep forever.

Exchanging of the wedding rings

As the official part of the wedding day, the ceremony can feel a little daunting but every wedding I’ve ever photographed has had these lovely little relaxed moments as the couple are saying their vows and exchanging rings. It’s such an intimate moment of holding hands and reassuring each other, whilst watched and supported by your nearest and dearest. In this photograph I love how the bride is looking adoringly at her groom whilst he recites his vows with a cheeky grin. The guest in the background is watching proudly and there’s always an air of excitement in the room at this stage as ‘the moment’ is about to happen!

Dancing like no-one is watching

The party on the night is such a great place for documentary wedding photography. The drinks are in full flow and people usually want to let their hair down after the excitement of the day. The mood usually changes a bit from ‘sentimental’ to ‘energetic’ and it’s a great way to end the story of the day. From my point of view, the more crazy the dancing the better! Great music, group hugs, tipsy singing and outrageous dance moves create the perfect environment for documentary photography and the photograph above shows a perfect example of this scene.
